  1. Mentor text was great for any level. Older students like the pictures and being read to. The letter of persuasion doesn't have to be for a pet; it could be a more serious topic like using cell phones in school. You can divide the students into groups to write in different age "voices" or in parent/child groups. To adapt it to a higher level, it could be turned into a debate, brainstorming the anticipated objections. The book provides the elements of argument, so that terminology could be used with older students, such as position statement and counter-argument. The book showed that the argument was progressive, using stronger reasoning as the story went on. The list of what good persuasive writers do was beneficial as a reference. The book illustrates logos/ethos/pathos for advanced students. The think/pair/share model was beneficial for struggling students. They could write a response from the parents using the counter-arguments. The counter-arguments helps students to think outside of their own worlds.
